The Shrine of Saint Rita of Cascia is a religious complex in which is venerated Santa Rita: The sanctuary is composed of several structures that cover both places where the saint lived, and for the reception of pilgrims.
Originally, the sanctuary was simply composed of a monastery and a small church which contained the urn with the remains of Saint Rita , in the early nineteenth century the existing facilities became inadequate for the growing number of pilgrims who came to Cascia and was so , thanks to the will of Mother Maria Teresa bands , which began the construction of a sanctuary capable of responding to the needs of the faithful : the complex includes two churches , a monastery , several multi-purpose rooms and a hostel.
The Basilica of Saint Rita of Cascia was strongly supported by Mother Bands: Construction work began in 1937 and was solemnly consecrated in 1947 after many difficulties, mainly of an economic nature , the Church , elevated to a minor basilica in 1955 , was built the project of Mary Spirit Schiappetta and comes in the shape of a Greek cross , characterized by four apses at the ends : one of these is the Chapel of Santa Rita houses the sarcophagus of the saint . [1] Incorporated into the basilica is also part of the old church , while the decorative elements , mostly paintings, have been performed by artists such as Louis Montanarini , Gisberto Ceracchini , Artemio Giovagnoni , Armando Marrocco and Ferruccio Ferrazzi
